Stratification effect on extreme-scale rolls in plane Couette flows

چکیده

The effect of weak stratification on turbulent plane Couette flows is studied by means direct numerical simulations at the Prandtl number air. We demonstrate that tends to reduce intensity streamwise streaks in channel center, eventually breaking characteristic large-scale rolls. By analyzing bursting mechanism (i.e. sweeps and ejections) responsible for vertical momentum transfer, we observe weaker events a disorganized spatial configuration. This scenario no longer supports generation rolls center.

Linear instability of compressible plane Couette flows

The stability of compressible plane Couette flow, which is a simple case of hypersonic wall-bounded shear flows, is not well understood even though incompressible Couette flow has been studied extensively by linear stability analysis and shown to be stable to linear disturbances. As a first step in studying the stability of three-dimensional hypersonic boundary layers, this paper studies the te...

α effect in a turbulent liquid-metal plane Couette flow.

We calculate the mean electromotive force in plane Couette flows of a nonrotating conducting fluid under the influence of a large-scale magnetic field for driven turbulence. A vertical stratification of the turbulence intensity results in an α effect owing to the presence of horizontal shear. Here we discuss the possibility of an experimental determination of the components of the α tensor usin...

On Weak Plane Couette and Poiseuille Flows of Rigid Rod and Platelet Ensembles

Films and molds of nematic polymer materials are notorious for heterogeneity in the orientational distribution of the rigid rod or platelet macromolecules. Predictive tools for structure length scales generated by shear-dominated processing are vitally important: both during processing because of flow feedback phenomena such as shear thinning or thickening, and postprocessing since gradients in...

Linear stability, transient energy growth, and the role of viscosity stratification in compressible plane Couette flow.

Linear stability and the nonmodal transient energy growth in compressible plane Couette flow are investigated for two prototype mean flows: (a) the uniform shear flow with constant viscosity, and (b) the nonuniform shear flow with stratified viscosity. Both mean flows are linearly unstable for a range of supersonic Mach numbers (M). For a given M , the critical Reynolds number (Re) is significa...

Instability of Plane Couette Flow

The energy gradient theory has been proposed with the aim of better understanding the mechanism of flow transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow. In this theory, it is suggested that the transition to turbulence depends on the relative magnitudes of the energy gradient amplifying the disturbance and the viscous friction damping that disturbance. For a given flow geometry and fluid propert...
